What is 4-H
4-H
is a nonprofit youth educational program administered through the UC
Cooperative Extension and is open to all youth aged 5 to 19. 4-H stands
for the four-fold development of youth: Head, Heart, Hands, and Health.
4-H provides youth with a variety of learning experiences that contribute to personal growth and development. Youth are encouraged to set their own goals and make their own plans and decisions. The program helps them to become self-reliant, responsible, and productive members of society. 4-H in Davis does not necessarily involve livestock animals. Projects offered through Golden Valley 4-H can include photography, sewing, arts and crafts, hiking, fishing and others. All projects are run by parent volunteers within the program or other 4-H clubs. Oftentimes, clubs will offer projects to members of other clubs, these would be countywide projects. |
Adult Involvement |
4-H
is a fantastic organization that provides many opportunities to youth.
However, the only way 4-H works is with adult volunteers. Adult
volunteer opportunities range from leading a project, overseeing a
committee ( for example, Picnic Day float building, Cotton candy sales,
holiday caroling, Halloween party decorations). Without adult
volunteers, 4-H would not exist. Each year we have requests from youth
for more projects, more activities and more community service projects.
At this time, we don't have enough adults leading some of these
activities. Please take a moment to think of the many ways that you can
help enrich the lives of our 4-H youth.
It is vital that parents of the club take on jobs that will strengthen our club. The youth are ultimately the ones who are making decisions about the club, but they need adults to help guide them. 4-H is not a drop off program for youth. Parents need to understand that the clubs run on adult involvement. Parents will be asked to run projects, lead committees and help with countywide events (Green and White Social, Spring Show, Farm Connection Day, Community Service Projects) 4-H is a year long program with one monthly meeting (club business meetings) the first Tuesday night of each month. The project meetings happen throughout the month at the location the project leader chooses. There are events throughout the year for the youth to participate in which often include adults chaperoning them, leading committees, assisting with setting up events, planning fundraisers and community service projects. Youth are strongly encouraged to complete a record book at the end of each year. It is extremely important that youth attend each of the club business meetings and project meetings. Youth will not be allowed to participate at the Spring Show if they have not attended 80% of club meetings as well as project meetings. If at this time, you are unsure about how to lead a project or what to teach, there are 4-H curricula in over 40 areas of study. Many of these are at our county office and available for our use. Please look at the following link to see a list of the variety of guides that are available. There are also many free resources for 4-H leaders to use. Please, don't hesitate to speak with Claire or Melissa about an idea you might have. Together we can give our youth an incredible 4-H experience. |
