What is 4-H
4-H is a nonprofit youth educational program administered through the UC Cooperative Extension and is open to all youth aged 5 to 19. 4-H stands for the four-fold development of youth: Head, Heart, Hands, and Health.

4-H provides youth with a variety of learning experiences that contribute to personal growth and development. Youth are encouraged to set their own goals and make their own plans and decisions. The program helps them to become self-reliant, responsible, and productive members of society.

4-H in Davis is not just animals. Projects offered through Golden Valley 4-H include photography, sewing, arts and crafts, hiking, fishing and others. All projects are run by parent volunteers within the program or other 4-H clubs.

4-H is a year long program with one monthly meeting. The project meetings happen throughout the month at the location the project leader chooses.

Adult Involvement

The only way 4-H works is with adult volunteers. Adult volunteer opportunities are available for events throughout the year such as chaperoning, leading committees, assisting with setting up events, planning fundraisers and community service projects, plus county-required obligations. At this time, we don't have enough adults leading some of these activities. Please take a moment to think of the many ways that you can help enrich the lives of our 4-H youth.

It is vital that parents of the club take on jobs that will strengthen our club. Youth are ultimately the ones making decisions about the club, but they need adults to help guide them. 4-H is not a drop off program for youth.

Youth are strongly encouraged to complete a record book at the end of each year. It is extremely important that youth attend each of the club business meetings and project meetings. Youth will not be allowed to participate at the Spring Show if they have not attended 80% of club meetings as well as project meetings.

If at this time, you are unsure about how to lead a project or what to teach, there are 4-H curricula in over 40 areas of study, available through our county office. Please look at the following link to see a list of the variety of guides that are available.

Please, don't hesitate to speak with Claire or Melissa about an idea you might have. Together we can give our youth an incredible 4-H experience.
